Our General Manager of the past 7 1/2 years has a long history in the hardware and tooling retail industry. Anyone that meets Steven is never in any doubt of his belief in team-work and what can be achieved with good people working together. A brief look into his past reveals why he is so passionate about it.
Prior to joining ovesco, Steven was GM and part owner of a very successful Newcastle Tradies Mecca known as “Toolies”... arguably Newcastle’s biggest professional trades tool store. Having started out 32 years earlier pushing a broom in the storeroom he quickly began to rise up the ladder (pun intended) in the team friendly environment.
Steven was born in Townsville and, after stints in Edmonton Canada and Brisbane, was drawn to Newcastle. Not for the beaches or the prospect of working in steel, but for the Ice Hockey Program.
His time in Canada as a kid has endowed him with unique sporting skills and the new Ice Hockey program in the town suited him perfectly. In 1980 he played for the Newcastle Northstars in the first Australian National Ice Hockey League. He then went on to coach the same team in the NSW East Coast Super League and the Australian Under 18 Ice hockey Team winning 3 World Championship Gold Medals.
It was here he developed his skills at building teams with a passion for winning. He is quietly committed to helping his team members achieve and loves bringing out the best in our people.
When Steven sold his share in Toolies, it wasn’t long before his wife pointed out that other than ice hockey, the time when he was most content was sending happy customers on their way with the quality tools and parts they needed to be building their dreams. He is still doing this today both with his hockey charges and his ovesco team. And we’re glad to have him.
